Who will win the group after Siera Leone’s disqualification?
The National Football Team Harambee Stars now has a through pass to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON 2019] after the continental governing body CAF released a letter detailing the decision to disqualify Sierra Leone officially from Group F.
The letter sent to the Kenya’s federation, the Football Kenya Federation [FKF] confirming that the first two teams, Kenya and Ghana , in the group would go through is already out and indeed Harambee Stars will again be part of the tournament after 14 years.
“Reference to the above mentioned subject, we regrettably inform you that following CAF Executive Committee meeting held in Accra, Ghana on the 30th of November 2018, the team of
Sierra Leone has been disqualified from the qualifiers of the Total 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Therefore, we hereby inform you that all matches played by Sierra Leone in the Group Stage of the said qualifiers are to be annulled. Hence, Group F would be consisted of only 3 teams (Ethiopia, Ghana & Kenya) with the following standings in order,” read the letter.
Sierra Leone, who are in Group F of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers alongside Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia have not been able to play their last three matches due to a FIFA ban on their FA. As it stands Kenya tops the group on seven points followed by Ghana with a point-less with Ethiopia a distant third on three points.
Kenya will play the Black Stars of Ghana in March next year to determine who runs away with the group as the two teams are already through. Harambee Stars, who have been nominated for the Team of The Year Award by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), beat Ghana 1-0 at home, drew 0-0 away to Ethiopia before hammering them 3-0 in the return leg to qualify.
Congratulations#HarambeeStars🇰🇪 for qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. I assure you of my support and that of the Government to facilitate and provide you with the necessary resources to ensure you are well prepared for the task ahead. Hongera! #AFCON2019
